Distribution is so weird when it comes to TX. I, personally don’t like it that I travel to Corpus Christi, TX, which is only about two hours away from San Antonio, where I am from, and I visit their Spec’s, which we also have, and they have different shit than we do here. It’s never a whole lot of difference, but enough of a difference that someone like me notices. I have now been to this Spec’s twice, and both times I have picked up a unique bottle from Rogue Ales. The first was Rogue Somer Orange Honey Ale, and now Irish Style Lager. I’m sure in other parts this beer is always available but down here, it is not. Beers like these are rare. Like I said, I have never seen these bottles sold in San Antonio, and I have only found them in Corpus Christi. OK, enough babbling…. review time!
For this beer, I was at “The Mad House”, my friend’s house, who is also my partner in crime behind Mad Pecker Brewing Company. We were sharing beers this night. He has cabinets full of pint glasses, and he let me use his Oskar Blues logo glass for this evening’s drinking session!
This beer poured a hazy yellow color with a thin white head, which had decent retention, which left a spotty soapy lacing, and always had a thin layer of head throughout this tasting. There is a moderate amount of carbonation bubbles rising in this beer.
I picked up smells of pale malts, which is grainy, and biscuit-like, mixed with a sweet yeasty smell.
The taste follows the aroma. This beer is all malts, giving off flavors of biscuit, or basically just bread-like characters. There is a slight hop bitterness there as well with a very small hint of citrus. The body is light, crisp and dry, with a good carbonation bite.
Overall, this beer wasn’t my favorite by Rogue, but it was definitely not the worst, either. I would drink this beer again. Good Irish style lager. Now according to their website, they wanted to make a beer that would be perfect for floating Guinness, which I’m sure is pretty good to do, but I’m not sure if they would have this beer again next time I visit Corpus, and I know for sure I won’t see it here in San Antonio. So if you decide to get this beer,and try it with a Guinness, please let me know how that works out for you.
I leave you with this song by the band MASTER. This was my first encounter with this band back in the early 90’s. I believe this song appeared on a compilation CD by Relapse Records, but this song was from an unreleased album from their early career. This song features a flute, which was the first time I had ever heard that in a Metal song. This song has always been one of my favorites. I included this song because of the flute. Just imagine the man on the bottle playing along with Master! Awesome!
