Crazy Mountain Brewing Company has been a company that I love sampling beer from. So far everything I have had from Crazy Mountain, I have enjoyed. I’m not going to lie here. What attracted me to this beer was, of course, the label. I loved the old creepy hands holding the rosary. Even when I was in the store buying this beer, I immediately thought of the album cover from Asphyx’s Last One on Earth album cover. So the Metal Connection for this beer was easy for me.
Using a Porter/Stout glass, this beer poured a slightly hazy orange color with the thinnest line of head with no retention, leaving no lacing down the glass. I was a bit disappointed in that, but this only lost a few points, as I did enjoy this beer.
The aroma of the beer is all Belgian. I pick up smells of fruit like a slight banana, and even a bit of citrus. There is also a spiciness picked up here that reminds me of smelling a clove cigarette. That smell is not so powerful though, so don’t get it twisted thinking that is the main smell here, cause I know not everyone is a fan of clove smell. This portion is subtle, and blended within the other aromas nicely. There is a lingering alcohol burn in your nose on this one.
Old Soul definitely has a Belgian taste, but the flavors are all subtle, and well blended, as nothing really stands out here. Some fruit flavors as citrus, and banana, mixed with spices and malts. There is an overall sweetness to this beer as well, a bit like brown sugar, or candy.
The body is a medium thickness, and the mouthfeel is a bit oily, leaving a lingering slickness in your throat.
Overall, I would not call this a masterpiece my any means, but it is a good, decent beer that I wouldn’t mind drinking again. it did it’s job, delivering a strong ale buzz at the end.
As mentioned, the Metal Connection was way too easy with this beer. I imagined the old priest man from the Asphyx album cover being the one behind the hands on the bottle. I wish this beer would have blown me away, just so it could have lived up to the hype I gave this beer due to the label.
