Back in early 2013, I had done another BMD on Tour post after visiting Middleton Brewing Company at their original location in Wimberley, TX. I had a great time there. Since then, I had the pleasure of serving their beer at Big Hops, when I worked there. I then had the pleasure of working at an event when I was working at Busted Sandal Brewing Company, where the folks of Middleton were also working. It was fun hanging out with them, and the other breweries who were involved. Now that I am working at Mad Pecker Brewing Company, my weekends are usually taken up by work, but one weekend, I finally had off, so I planned a trip with my wife to visit the new location of Middleton Brewing Company, which is now located within the city limits of San Marcos, TX. It’s actually not too far from their old location.
When we arrived there, we were one of the first guests of the day, which was cool, cause it gave us the chance to talk to the bartender a bit longer, with his undivided attention. After a good conversation about the obvious, beer, and a few other subject like the move to the new location, and how I used to serve Middleton beers at Big Hops, it was time to dive right into their offerings for the day. Both the wife and I purchased a different flight tray so we could sample all their beers.
Beers in my flight:
- Garnet – Belgian Amber: 4/5
- Tourmaline – Belgian Dubbel: 4.25/5
- Maggie T’s ESB – Extra Special/Strong Bitter: 3.75/5
- Black Lab Porter – American Porter: 3.5/5
- Hop Fuey – American IPA: 3.75/5
- Opal – Belgian Blonde: 4.75/5
Beers in my wife’s flight:
- Pepperhead – American IPA with locally grown peppers: 3.25/5
- Topaz – Belgian Tripel: 4/5
- Tourmaline – Belgian Dubbel: 4.25/5
- Bobcat Red – American Amber/Red Ale: 3.75/5
- Hop Fuey – American IPA: 3.75/5
- Opal – Belgian Blonde: 4.75/5
I was really impressed by Middleton’s new location. The tap room is a perfect size. They have coolers of bottles to sell as well. The brewing equipment is in plain sight from the bar area, giving this place an excellent brewpub feel. When the weather is perfect, there is plenty of seating outside in the patio area, and a deck area on the roof, complete with a second small bar for the nights they are busy. The roof top deck has an excellent view to the scenery around the brewpub. One thing that made the experience at Middleton even more special was meeting the brewery cat, Dunkel. We are both cat lovers, and this cat was amazing, very loving, and friendly.
If you ever find yourself in San Marcos, TX, please visit this brewery. Your experience there will be a good one, trust me. Also, do yourself a favor and go to Pie Society for some amazing pizza. With pizzas named The Illuminati, The 78-666, El Diablo, The Eternal Flame, The Master of Ceremony, The Key and more, what is not to love? The taste of these pies are equally as great as their names. When we got there, it was during their All Seeing Slice Hours, so we were able to taste several different slices. Perfect ending to this perfect day.
