Over the past few years, I have been blessed by the Beer Gods, well, not really, more like I have had the opportunity to try such great beers as NoDa’s Hop, Drop ‘n Roll IPA. Working at a great Craft Beer bar has brought me a handful of great new friends who love to share their treasures like this beer, since it is not available to purchase in the state of TX. One of the times that I was able to have this beer was when my friend, Chris Youngs sent me a trade box from North Carolina, where he lives now. He was a San Antonio local at one point. I am so glad we remained in contact. Cheers to you good sir!
The 16 oz. tallboy can is pretty eye catching with it’s bright green color. This whole can just screams sock hop from the 1950’s with it’s large text used for the beer name, and the white & yellow two toned front end of what I believe, to be a 1957 Mercury Monterey Convertible. I may be wrong, but this is the closest resemblance that I could find. Correct me if I am wrong in the comments below.
I poured this beer into a special designed signature IPA glass by Spiegelau. his IPA had a hazy copper color, which the initial pour left a large inch wide white fluffy head. There was great head retention throughout the session, leaving a sheet of sticky lacing down the glass.
The aroma was tons of upfront hops. Right away, I was hit by the dominant citrus hops with scents of orange zest, orange juice, and grapefruit, which was then met with hints of greenery like pine and grass. There was a mild caramel, toffee malt character, and mild white bread smell masked by the hops.
The taste of this beer is very similar to the nose. Citrus hop characters hit the palate first with flavors of orange zest, orange juice, and grapefruit. Throughout the session as the beer warms, more flavors pop through, like caramel, toffee, fresh baked white bread, mixed with green apples, and a mild taste of mango. The aftertaste is all citrus.
Hop, Drop ‘n Roll had a medium body with a harsh, crisp, yet a bit oily mouthfeel, and a moderate carbonation presence. This beer finishes dry, which worked well with the citrus aftertaste.
Overall, I will have to agree with the rest of the world who have rated this beer high. Both sites, Beer Advocate and Rate Beer have high ratings on this beer, even a 99 (as of now) on Rate Beer. I gave this amazing IPA a 5/5, as I also thought this was a great example of an American IPA with tons of hops, blended with hints of malts, leading to a great combination of flavors. I hope to get my hands on some more of this can. Hopefully, one day this beer will be distributed here in Texas. For now, I guess I must ask my good friend Chris to send me some more. (hint, hint!)
Metal Connection: Since the artwork on the can of Hop, Drop ‘n Roll has an old classic car on it, I wanted to find a cover of an old classic song. There were a few to choose from, but ultimately, Sodom took the win for this Metal Connection. This isn’t the first time I have used this amazing German Thrash Metal band here on the site, and for good reason, it’s fuckin’ Sodom! On the band’s 2001 full length album, M-16, which was Sodom’s 10th album, they recorded a cover of The Trashmen’s “Surfin’ Bird.” I mean, why not, right? This is a great version of a wild classic song that goes great with a Hop, Drop ‘n Roll IPA by NoDa Brewing Co. Crank it up, mother fuckers, and know that the bird is the word!
