Alright BeerMetalDude.com viewers, I know you have seen me throw a lot of thanks to Jorge Espinoza of animebeers.com, cause without him, some of these amazing beers would have never been reviewed for this site.In early 2015, Jorge started home brewing under the name Nubis Sanctum Ales, and he has sent me a few different beers he has brewed. Las Quadtro Monjas was the first one I tried, which is a Belgian Quadrupel, a style that I really enjoy. I was really impressed by this beer.
Of course this beer from Jorge would not be complete without a killer homemade beer label, which, of course, features anime. Now, I am not up to speed on all these characters, but I see that this label features four different anime female warrior characters. The name of the beer, Las Quatro Monjas is a play on the Spanish translation of The Four Nuns, so this label is quite fitting.
I poured this beer into a St. Feuillien goblet glass. The beer’s appearance was an opaque reddish brown colot topped with about a 1/2 inch foamy khaki colored head, which did disappear rather quickly, leaving no lacing down the glass.
My nose was hit with a big banana aroma up front, blended in with sweet brown sugar/molasses, and some dark fruits like raisins, prunes, and figs. There are characteristics of caramel, dark cherries, vanilla, anise, fennel, a little black licorice, a bit of red wine, leather, and a nice alcohol boozy burn.
The taste is just as complex as the nose. A lot of flavor profiles here with this beer. Right up front, there is a big taste of banana followed by brown sugar/molasses, dark fruits like raisins, prunes, and figs. There are also flavors of caramel, dark cherries, banana nut bread, red wine, sweet rock candy, red apples, spices like anise, black licorice, and fennel. There is an aftertaste of banana nut bread, brown sugar, and dark cherries.
The body is slightly over medium in thickness with a slick and oily mouthfeel. The oily feeling lasts through to the finish of this beer.
I love Belgian Quads, and I was not disappointed by this home brew. My buddy, Jorge definitely knows how to brew up some magic within these bottles. I really look forward to many more beers from my California friend. His ideas for beers are complex, wild, and definitely outside the box. I know it is weird to review a home brew, since many of you will never get to taste these beers (for now), but you never know, maybe one day we will all get to sit and drink beers from Nubis Sanctum Ales. Cheers my friends!
Metal Connection: As stated above the name of the beer, Las Quadtro Monjas translates to The Four Nuns, so what better way to celebrate this amazing beer than with an amazing song. I have chosen the classic song, “Nuns have no Fun” from Heavy Metal legends, Mercyful Fate. This band is highly recognized by ling vocalist, King Diamond’s distinct voice. No other sings like him, and you either love it or hate it. I personally love it. Formed in 1981 in Denmark, Mercyful Fate was the main band for King Diamond until he formed the band, King Diamond in 1985 when Mercyful Fate split up. In 1992, Mercyful fate reformed and King Diamond had both bands alive and putting out classic Heavy Metal albums at the same time. Going back to 1982, before Mercyful Fate put out it’s debut full length album, Melissa, they released the Mercyful Fate EP which had 4 songs, including my choice for this Metal Connection, “Nuns have no Fun.” Enjoy this slice of Metal history, and remember to support your friends who home brew. Cheers!
