My friends know me way too well. They know if they are to ever get me beer, it will have to be a Metal looking beer. Here is a fine example of this. Thanks to my buddy Jeremy for giving me a can of this amazing Double IPA.
First thing first, this can is an amazing piece of art to someone like me. The actual art piece is a hand drawn goat faced devil with a black hooded cape draped over it. There is a pentagram on the forehead of the devil. He is drawn with his arms wide open, as inviting us all to the evil side. What I love so much about this can art, is that is looks like something I would have drawn on my school book covers when I was in Middle School. It’s such a throwback piece for me. The can is mostly black with a red open explosion where the devil is drawn. Way to go Hoof Hearted.
I poured this beer into a Spiegelau IPA Specialty Glass. The beer’s appearance was a hazy bright golden/orange color topped with nearly an inch wide foamy head. There was a thick sheet of lacing left down the glass throughout this session.
The aroma was a ton of upfront blend of citrus and tropical fruit notes. There was a nose full of orange, and grapefruit mixed well with lemon, some mango, pineapple, and a small hint of guava. There is a small hint of floral greenery thrown in there, as well. There is a nice biscuit bread aroma that peeks through all the hop characters.
The taste is flavorful, and balanced. The hop presence was high and plentiful. Citrus and tropical fruit notes. Orange, grapefruit, mango, pineapple, and some guava. There was a nice mix of floral greenery and some lemon as well. There was a sweet candy sugar and biscuit bread backbone. Definitely strong, juicy, and bitter. For a 10.2% beer, this one did not have a strong boozy presence. The aftertaste was pure citrus juice.
The body was medium-heavy with a slick, and oily mouthfeel that had a nice bitter bite as well. This one had decent carbonation. After the oily slickness mellowed out, the finish left my throat dry.
Overall, I was super impressed by this beer, and brewery, as this was my first encounter with Hoof Hearted Brewing Company. I really hope this is not my last. I have seen some of their other offerings and I really want to get my hands on them, so if you are reading this, and can help with that, please let me know. Satan thanks you!
Metal Connection: Well duh… this one was fucking easy! I chose the title track of Slayer’s 1988 full length album, South of Heaven. I don’t really think the band Slayer really needs an introduction here, as you all should know who they are. If you don’t, do us all a favor and just kill yourself, thanks! All kidding(?) aside, Slayer has been pumping out Satanic tunes since 1981, and are still going strong. Sure, the line-up has changed a bit due to the death of one of their forming members, Jeff Hanneman in 2013. Many of the band’s songs are huge influences on today’s Metal bands, including the song “South of Heaven.” Today’s version of Slayer is not loved as much as the younger version of this band, but they are still one of the band’s leading the charge in the Metal scene around the world. So, grab a can of this delicious DIPA, and jam an old classic.
