For many years I have been a fan of female fronted Heavy Metal, Doom, Sludge, Stoner Metal style bands. My first real experience was the album, Madylion by the band, The Gathering. I never really looked back, and found myself searching for more bands in the same vein. I have discovered some real gems over the years. My latest find is the Doom Metal band, SubRosa from Salt Lake City, Utah. SubRosa features 3 females, Rebecca Vernon (Guitars, Vocals), Sarah Pendleton (Violin, Lyre, Vocals), and Kim Pack (Violin, Backing Vocals). Rounding out the line-up is Levi Hanna (Bass) and Andy Patterson (Drums). Together, these musicians make some eerie, slow, heavy, and beautiful Doom Metal. Even though, this is my first encounter with this band, they have actually been together since 2005, releasing 4 full length studio albums tot his day.
Their latest release, For this we Fought the Battle of Ages was released in late 2016 on Profound Lore Records. This album was the first experience for me with this band. In fact, the song I am featuring for this week is the first song I ever heard by SubRosa. Here is the official music video for the song, “Troubled Cells.” This song has a powerful meaning about youth suicides in their local area in Utah. This 7 1/5 minute long epic song is powerful, heavy, and has some beautiful vocal patterns throughout the song. Please give this whole song a listen, and check out the othe songs and albums from this band. Click this link as well to see some live concert footage of the band during their performance at Hellfest 2014.
