Memoriam is a super group of Death Metal icons, but put together for a sad reason. When Martin “Kiddie” Kearns, the drummer for the Death Metal band, Bolt Thrower past away in 2015, the legendary war machine decided to call it quits. The vocalist, Karl Willetts put together the band, Memoriam as a tribute to the late drummer. The line-up consists of of big players in the Death Metal underground scene like, bassist, Frank Healy (Benediction, Sacrilege, ex-Napalm Death, ex-Anaal Nathrakh (live), ex-Cerebral Fix), guitarist, Scott Fairfax (Benediction (live), ex-Cerebral Fix), and drummer, Andrew Whale (Bolt Thrower‘s original drummer). Together these men, who’s ages range from 39-54 play some punishing war inspired Death Metal, in the vein of classic Bolt Thrower.
The song, “Reduced to Zero” is the featured Song of the Week, and for good reason… It fuckin’ kicks ass! So many head banging moments within this almost 7-minute long opus of humankind’s demise. This song has all the classic elements of a good Death Metal song inspired by the sound of the later years Bolt Thrower. “Reduced to Zero” is full of heavy guitar riffs and bass lines, non blasting drum beats, and the signature delivery of Karl Willetts’ vocal style and lyrics. I enjoy the transitional riff at 1:45, as you think this song will go right into a fast blast beat or grind, they pull you right back into slow heaviness. Simply brilliant!
I don’t normally post a Song of the Week from an album that has not yet been released, but I could not help myself this time! Our song here comes from their debut full length album, For the Fallen, which is set to be released at the end of March on Nuclear Blast Records.
I am not sure what the future hold for this band, but I hope it’s not just a one album deal. I would like to see this band continue on making album after album, and touring the world, and such! This ha potential to be great!
