Machete don’t drink Pussy beer! At least those are the words I thought about when I first saw this beer. Lincoln Beer Company out of Burbank, CA opened the 15 barrel production brewery in 2016, and opened a taproom to the public in 2017. The company is led by Brewer and owner, Patrick Dunn, who became fascinated with Craft Beer within his college years. After several years of homebrewing, he took the leap, and did what 99.9% of homebrewers want to do, open a brewery.

The brewery teamed up with Machete himself, Danny Trejo to brew this beer as badass as its namesake. I am a huge fan of the man, the myth, the legend of cult films since I first saw him in a movie. For me, it was Blood In, Blood Out (aka Bound by Honor) from 1993. He has had a great movie career which includes doing some work with directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez with the movies Desperado, From Dusk till Dawn, Spy Kids, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, and of course Machete. Trust me though, his list of films is rather long. I’m sure you know the man, even if not by name. He’s the long-haired tattooed Mexican who usually plays some sort of bad ass in his films. Recognized by his large chest piece tattoo of a woman wearing a sombrero. Yup, that bad ass dude! So, it was a no brainer that I had to get my hands on this beer bearing this dude’s name and image.

The can is pretty simple, but then again it doesn’t have to be all so colorful to show off the bad-assness of this collaboration beer. It’s a 16 oz all black can with reflective golden letters and image. In a cursive writing towards the top of the can it says “Nectar of the Mexican Gods.” At the bottom of the can it says “Mexican Craft Lager with the ABV (4.7%) and can size. The artwork is a gold circle with a clip art style image of Trejo’s face. With the beer name written going around the circle. That’s it. Simple.

Appearance: Clear golden color topped with a 1/2 inch white foamy head

Aroma: Corn, grains, light grassy aroma, a bit of lemon peel and a hint of citrus. Picking up a bit of a floral note.

Taste: The flavor matches the aroma perfectly.  I taste the corn, grass-like flavor, lemon peel, some citrus, and a floral taste.

Body/Mouthfeel: Medium thickness, and a smooth and velvety mouthfeel. Moderate carbonation. Slick mouth coating finish.

Overall: Definitely lives up to the name and style. Will pair well with many types of food including street tacos, or just Mexican food comes to mind for sure. Some added lime and salt for the white girl wasted foo’s out there will pretty much compliment this beer. But why waste an already perfectly flavored beer. I will definitely get more cans of this beer when I can, ’cause I’m a Mexi-Can, not a Mexi-Can’t.

Metal Connection: Drawn and Quartered is a Death Metal band from Seattle, WA. They formed back in 1994, even though their career actually began back in 1992, when they were known as Plague Bearer. They changed the name of the band so that guitarist, Kelly Kuciemba could use the Plague Bearer name as a side project.

Drawn and Quartered is an active band still and have released 8 full length albums so far in their career. Guitarist, Kelly Kuciemba and vocalist/current bassist, Herb Burke are original members still with the band to this day. In 1998, they self-released their debut full length album, To Kill is Human. This album was later picked up and reissued by Krucyator Records (France) on CD, and Nameless Grave Records (USA) on cassette and vinyl. Joining Kuciemba and Buke were bassist, Greg Reeves, and drummer, Matt Cason. To Kill is Human was recorded at Vagrant Studios with producer Keenan Kelly and co-produced by the band. The cover was drawn by artist Gabriel Byrne.

The Metal Connection for this beer comes to us from this debut album. No, they do not have a song bearing Danny Trejo’s name, but rather a song titled Machete Bloodbath, and since Trejo portrayed a character named Machete, I thought this song was very fitting. I will go into a lot more detail on this band on a future episode of The Beer Metal Show Podcast, as I will have them as a featured band at some point. For now, please enjoy this Metal Connection song. Cheers!
