Review – Bourwerij Sterkens St. Sebastiaan Golden Ale

Brewery: Brouwerij Sterkens
Beer: St. Sebastiaan Golden Ale
Style: Tripel
ABV: 7.7%
Character: Ceramic Bottle with Yeast Hoist Artwork

Beer Metal Rating: 4/5

YeastHoistFirst thing first with this one. The bottle packaging is amazing! Now, I knew none of the facts about this beer when I purchased it, but I found out that the name on the front of the bottle, Yeast Hoist is not the actual name of the beer. This is actually the name of an ongoing series of comics by American artist, Ron Regé, Jr. The artist supplied the artwork that is printed on the limited edition ceramic crock, and the fifteenth installment of the comic was made exclusively for this beer, and hangs from the neck of the bottle. Normally this Golden Ale is packaged different. See the artwork attached.

Served in my Boulevard Brewing Smokestack Series tulip glass. Poured a hazy golden color with a fluffy white head about yeastHtwo fingers thick. There was nice lacing left on the glass while drinking. There were plenty of streamlines of carbonation present.

I love to read beer reviews when they describe the aromas of a beer, and sometimes people list some crazy stuff that they say they can smell. I guess I have a “normal” nose for aromas. I get a strong whiff of fruit such as green apples, pears, and bananas. There is a hint of alcohol as well as a nice yeasty smell to top it off.

I love the taste of this beer. The taste definitely follows the aroma, as there are hints of apple or pear present. It is crisp and sweet. This has a nice medium body, and leaves a smooth sebastiaancreamy feel afterwards with slight spices and alcohol in the aftertaste. I love most beers I have had from Belgium, and this one is no exception. Even if I don’t find another “Yeast Hoist” version, I will definitely buy St. Sebastiaan Golden Ale again and again and so should you! On a side note, even though it says the ABV of this beer is 7.7%, I finished the entire 16.9 ounces with only a slight, almost light beer buzz. I could go for another bottle right now…

Cheers,

BeerMetalDude!

    1. Jay, best thing to is search online for beer stores who ship bottles to OH, and see if they carry this beer in their inventory. I’m sure you can get it, if I can get it here in San Antonio, TX. Cheers!
