Trader Joe’s Grocery Store sells beer that is made exclusively for them that is brewed by Gordon Biersch Brewing Company. Their beers are mostly German-styled beers such as Pilsners, Märzens, Hefeweizens, and Dunkelweizens to name a few. The best part of a Trader Joe’s beer is the price. They sell their beer for a very low price per bottle, and you can make your own 6 pack of any bottle or can they have in their beer section. If you happen to live near a Trader Joe’s, go in and check out their beer section. Pretty good shit!

For this Dunkelweizen, I poured the beer into a 23oz Weizen glass by Libbey Glassware. This beer poured a slightly hazy amber color, crowned with a 2 finger wide off white frothy head. There was good retention on the head throughout this session, leaving excellent web-like sticky lacing down the glass.

The aroma was a bit typical for a Dunkelweizen, which is a good thing. Meaning that this beer was made to the mold of the classic style. Fruit notes were upfront with scents of banana and a hint of orange peel. I also picked up on the malts which had hints of caramel, nuttiness. There was also a bit of pepper.

Taste followed the nose as far as all the same elements, but for me, the taste hit me in a different order. The sweetness of caramel, and brown sugar/molasses hits the palate first, followed by the taste of orange peel, and banana. The tail end of the taste is peppery and has a nice bitter bite.

The body is a light-medium thickness, leaning more on the lighter side. The mouthfeel is silky, and smooth, coating the throat. There is a nice bitter bite at the end of the taste.

Overall, I will say that this beer is one that can be easily enjoyed again and again. Good, solid average Dunkelweizen. For the price that this is sold at Trader Joe’s, I will be purchasing this beer again to enjoy on a night of beer drinking with friends.

Metal Connection: A Dunkel is a darker version of a German Hefeweizen, so I chose a dark German Metal band. Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult is a female fronted Black Metal band who has been active since 1997, and have put out five full length albums in their career. This song, “The Dead Hate the Living” is from their sophomore full length, Nocturnal March, which was self released by the band in 2004. I chose a live, professionally shot video from the band’s performance at PartySan Metal Open Air Festival in 2005.
